Jell-O Mold Competition : Competition that asked designers to take Jell-O out of the cafeteria and break the mold, as it were, on Jell-O molds. The 2009 inaugural competition held in Brooklyn had 20 designers competing and a crack panel of respected judges, including conceptual designers Jason Miller and Tobias Wong, Jennifer Appel of Buttercup Bake Shop, and Thu Tran of Food Party, awarding prizes based on creativity, aesthetics, structural/ sculptural integrity, and edibility/culinary appeal. The event was featured in Maira Kalman’s New York Times blog, Make, Core77, Time Out New York, Serious Eats, and Eat Me Daily among others. Michelle created the brand and identity of the competition. She directed the design and layout of the event’s website with the help of Symon Chow. She also selected and coordinated the judging panel, organized the design participants, and co-organized a vacuum forming workshop in the lead-up to the competition for designers.
